Customizing your iPhone – Part 3 – Custom SMS Sounds
Tools you’ll need:
Jail Broken iPhone
OpenSSH (download from Cydia)
Any Audio Converter that can convert files to .aiff files
(NCH Switch Sound File Converter Free Edition used)
WinSCP or other preferred SSH Client
Find a sound byte you’ll like to use as your SMS Tone sound, remember to keep it 1 to 2 seconds long. (Might be able to get away with a longer tone…but WHY?!)
Once that file is found open up your Audio Converter. The SMS tone I’m using is this one. It is the Power Rangers Communicator Beep. (I’m a dork I know)
In your Audio Converter program add the file you selected. Select .aiff as the file format you’d like to convert to.
When the conversion is complete navigate to that file and rename it. Please keep in mind this is very important, any mistake and the iPhone will not pick it up.
The sound should be renamed to sms-received1.caf
When asked if you’re sure if you want to rename the file extension click yes.
Next, open up your SSH program (if you need help on how to SSH Please read my tutorial here)
Navigate to,
/System/Library/Audio/UISounds
Find the file
sms-received1.caf
and rename the extension (the .caf) to .bak
Find your sms-received1.caf that you just created and copy it to your iPhone through the SSH program you chose.
When the copy finishes respring or reboot your iPhone for the changes to take effect.
On your iPhone go to SETTINGS, then to SOUNDS, and then to NEW TEXT MESSAGE.
Select Tri-Tone and you should now hear your custom SMS sound.
Renaming Tri-Tone to a custom name is not possible since it is built into the UI as that.
If you’d like to upload more custom SMS sounds follow the steps but follow the same naming convention.
sms-received2.caf to sms-received6.caf
Then DONE! ENJOY!
PS! If you do not want to LOSE your stock tones rename them to .bak when using a custom one then back to .caf when no custom sms tones are being used.
